“I just wanted to listen to those three seconds over and over.” “Oh my God, that’s the best beginning to a song ever.” That one song – is it ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’?” This is the song that Park gives Eleanor on their first mixed tape. If Eleanor & Park had a tagline, it would be “Love will tear us apart.” Soon my darling, soon my darling.” Sweet Disposition, The Temper Trap “High climbs the summer sun, high stands the corn, That guy doesn’t exist enough (for me) in fiction. With Park - with all of my male heroes, really – I’m trying to portray someone who’s masculine, but still tender and full of big feelings. It’s from the point of view of a poor farmboy envisioning how he’ll provide for his beloved. This song – Love on a Farmboy’s Wages – is one of my favorite XTC songs, and it’s especially quiet and romantic. I had this picture of Park as an island of thoughtfulness in a sea of chaos everybody else is screaming and being crass, and he’s listening to intellectual New Wave. Or maybe he’d make a special bus tape with as much screaming and wailing on it as possible. Tomorrow he was going to bring Skinny Puppy or the Misfits. Park pressed his headphones into his ears. XTC was no good for drowning out the morons at the back of the bus. So this is the song that Park is listening to on his headphones the very first time we meet him.

The story begins with Cat and Bones at their home enjoying their peaceful time, and each other. Up From the Grave was a great final book, very exciting, lots of action, some tense moments when you thought your loved characters would die, and seeing all of our friends again not to mention spending more time with Cat & Bones, made this that much more enjoyable. But having come to terms with this ending, I could not wait to read it, and Jeaniene does not disappoint. I was sad when Jeaniene told her fans, that she was writing the final book for our fabulous couple Cat and Bones. I am a big fan of this series, having loved it from the start, and each year I would anxiously await a new book. That means having to be especially careful with the one woman she has allowed herself to love, Priya, a ruler of Ahiranya, recently freed from domination by Parijatdvipa. Her every move from that point forward has to be shaped by the need to present herself not simply as a strong leader but as one favored by the gods and so destined to succeed in capturing the throne. She immediately faces a crisis of confidence with the nobles who have supported her. It is a terrifying weapon, gripping her soldiers with the primitive fear that they may be following a false empress whom the gods wish to destroy. This is not normal flame but what appears to be a sacred fire that spreads wildly among her troops. Malini, having refused to make that sacrifice, moves ahead with her plans, supported by rebel factions, and at the opening of the novel appears poised to succeed in a major battle.īut her plans fail when a barrage of flaming arrows hits her troops. The faith that guides the empire draws its power from the grisly burning deaths of highborn women who willingly sacrifice themselves to a terrible fate. The story opens as the rebel princess Malini, now claiming the title of empress of Parijatdvipa, leads her army against a major force of her brother Chandra, the emperor backed by the priesthood of the realm. Her prose is sharp and memorable - I found myself underlining sentences in every chapter - and the subject matter is timely. Wiener’s memoir is getting rave and deserved reviews. While Wiener is something of an outsider (someone who likes “long novels with minimalist plot” in a city that wants “a world freed of decision-making, the unnecessary friction of human behavior”), she gets swept up in a Silicon Valley on the brink of taking over the world. She finds herself moving to San Francisco in the middle of the startup boom. When the book starts, Wiener is a “privileged and downwardly mobile” literary agent’s assistant in NYC. But what took us so long?Īnna Wiener’s terrific new memoir, Uncanny Valley, traces one person’s journey through the tech euphoria and subsequent alienation of the last decade. Whether it’s Russian bots hacking our elections or dystopian surveillance programs, in the last few years we seem to have realized that a world governed by inhuman algorithms and Silicon Valley billionaires is maybe not the utopia we were hoping for. He wants to blame God for punishing Samson too harshly, but Samson tells his father the fault is only his. The chorus announces that someone is coming, and Samson's father Manoa appears.Īt first, Manoa does not recognize Samson. Samson admits that he himself is the only one to blame, as he was the one who told Delila the Nazirite secret about his hair. They also note the tragedy of Samson's blindness, but encourage Samson not to blame God for what has happened to him. They express their sorrow over how the man who once slew a lion with his bare hands now sits imprisoned in rags. The chorus appears and they, too, lament Samson's fall. His speech is interrupted when he hears footsteps coming his way. He feels so demoralized that he even describes himself as a living grave. He explains that his blindness is by far the hardest aspect of his imprisonment, as he feels cut off from God's creation. Samson, imprisoned and blinded by Philistines in Gaza, laments his state, noting that the person who was supposed to save Israel from the Philistines has now become their slave.
